RP firms bag business deals in its debut in US BPO fair
October 5-7, 2004: OutsourceWorld New York, United States
Twelve Philippine companies met with small and medium businesses engaged in the offshore outsourcing business in OutsourceWorld New York 2004 (5-7 October) , the world's leading outsourcing conference and exhibition held recently, the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM) said.
We are optimistic that the new business partnerships generated from OutsourceWorld will create more jobs and boost the Philippine image as a highly competitive outsourcing destination in Asia," said Trade Undersecretary Thomas G. Aquino.
Companies present in OutsourceWorld were: Ambergris Solutions, American Data Exchange Corp. , Design International, Diversified Technology Solutions International, Etelecare International, Globalstride, Epixtar Corporation, Innove Communications, PeopleSupport Inc., Philippine Long Distance Company Secomp International and Software Ventures International Corporation.
Philippine companies met with trade visitors, mostly small and midsize companies. Aside from this, they also met executives from Dell that expressed interest in Philippine call centers and JP Morgan global infrastructure group.
"OutsourceWorld became a good venue to meet new clients and expand our market reach. We appreciate the support of PLDT and Innove Communications which sponsored the participation and CITEM for organizing this participation," said James Donovan, president and CEO of American Data Exchange Corp. (ADEC).
The Philippine booth generated about 109 buyer inquiries. One call center company based in the Philippines reported US$2 million negotiated sales for outbound services and US$5 million for outbound joint venture operations.
Other potential deals made were in areas such as offshore 3D animation services, call center services and software development.
To date, the Philippines has been a significant source of outsourcing services from the United States and Europe. American companies such as AIG and Procter & Gamble to name a few rely on the Philippines for its management, finance and accounting services. Meanwhile, BPO firms like Alitalia airline and International Red Cross already established their presence in the country's outsourcing industry.
Global research and consulting firm Meta Group ranked the Philippines number four worldwide in terms of availability of knowledge workers. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) reported accountants in the Philippines are "among the best in the world." Annual surveys by the Economist Intelligence Unit put Philippine workers in general at par with their peers in Singapore.
Some analysts reported that expansion in outsourcing services on a global basis is projected to grow at US$50 billion by the end of 2006.
OutsourceWorld was part of the technology events organized during New York's Technology Week. Some 95 exhibitors participated in the fair and some 18, 000 trade visitors went to the different technology events, including CETEX, a consumer electronics exhibit and BPO Connections, a matchmaking, sales and networking event for individual companies looking for BPO solutions and services.
The country's first participation in the BPO fair also allowed local companies to benchmark with other countries engaged in BPO. Participants meanwhile noted that in order for the Philippines to maintain its strong foothold in the BPO industry, government efforts should be channeled to continuously improving the English language proficiency of its workforce as well as maintaining lower labor costs to meet competition with countries like China.
The presence of Philippine IT companies in New York further reinforces our bid to provide them with global market exposure and, at the same time, promote inward trade missions to the country, added Aquino. "We look hope to make the Philippines as the preferred outsourcing destination in Asia and we are looking forward to generating new business partnerships with companies in the US for outsourcing services."
The Department of Trade and Industry, through CITEM, in cooperation with the Business Processing Association of the Philippines organized the Philippine participation to OutsourceWorld. Meanwhile, telecommunications giants PLDT and Innove sponsored the country's attendance to said event.
